Hello!
I’ve been spending a lot of time trying to figure out just how I’m going to start this blog, but I’m still stumped. There’s so many ways I could go, but where’s the beginning? I’ve decided to just begin with vanilla.
I’m making it a personal goal to try to write “walkthroughs” of sorts through today’s different software, internet, and email programs, so that the average Joe can figure it out. Everything is only getting harder as time progresses, so I figure I’ll play the hero and put all the answers in one spot. I’m not a computer genius, I don’t have any fancy degrees (yet), but I do know a thing or two about the topics I plan on covering in this blog. Please feel free to give me criticisms, suggestions, ask me questions, or compliment me.

So, what is vanilla?
I’d say vanilla is the very first thing you see when you log on to your computer, called your Desktop. This is completely my own opinion, but I feel the less junk you have on it, the less confusing it is. Keep the important stuff you use on a regular basis on it. For example, my desktops consists of:
1. My internet browser. I use Google Chrome. You can also use Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer, or if you’re on a Mac, Safari. I will discuss these in more detail later, but for now, I’d just use which ever was defaulted on your computer (usually Internet Explorer.)
2. Microsoft Word. I use this constantly. Microsoft Word is by far one of the most useful programs for ANYTHING you need to do on a computer. There is a LOT of things I plan to branch into with Microsoft Word, and it’s other programs.
3. Recycling Bin. This is usually defaulted on your desktop, I just move it to a corner, and leave it. We’ll cover it more as the blog goes on. It’s what it looks like – your computer’s garbage can.
4. The antivirus software. There are millions of brands. If you don’t have anything, like Norton or McAfee, I’d recommend AVG 2011. Want to know more about it? I’ll link it, and feel free to comment or message me about it. Super easy, and a great way to keep your computer moving.
5. If it applies, your Itunes or Music player, if you use any.
6. I have other programs I keep up, that I use very often, mostly because A. I’m a student, and B. I’m a computer nerd. If you have any thing you use often, feel free to add it.
I try to keep the individual junk off my desktop. That’s why we have file folders labeled “My Documents” or “My Pictures”. I’ll give you 2 guess as to what those have.
You can move these icons around in any fashion you like, or let them sit wherever they landed. To move an icon, just move your mouse over the icon, click ONE TIME with the left mouse button and HOLD IT, and while holding, move it to its designated spot. When you choose the spot, just let off the button. Boom, you’re done. I’ll show you a picture of my Desktop. It’s pretty generic looking, as I turned down a lot of my computers features, but you’ll get the idea of how I like my desktop to look.

I know my Wallpaper is flippin awesome. Anyway, as you can see, I have everything sort of sectioned off for what each thing is. My Microsoft programs are together, my nerdy stuff is together, my boyfriend’s WoW stuff is together, and my antivirus and computer care/recycling bin stuff is together. You don’t have to be as nit-picky as I am, by any means. I just know it definitely helps me when I’m trying to find a certain program.
Currently I’m running a Windows 7 Operating system. If that means nothing to you, so be it. If you know what I’m talking about, grats, and let me know if I need to tweak anything for Mac or older operating systems. I’m versed in all of them, and they haven’t changed much in procedure. I’ll go into some specifics about this system and some of its cool features in a future post.
I’m excited to keep contributing to this mini-manual, and hope I can help at least ONE person figure out something. Please stay tuned for more!
